OUGD504 | STUDIO BRIEF 3 | CONSIDERATIONS

To create a professional publication, all aspects of the production need to be considered.

The stock is the first thing the person holding the book will notice. What does it feel like? Are the images clear? How does the colour of the stock work with the design? All of these should be considered when choosing a stock choice. The gsm of the stock is also a big factor. If the stock is very thick, the user might not be able to easily flick through it, but if the stock is too thin, it may be less durable.

The size is another a factor that needs to be a decided.  The size and dimension of the publication impacts greatly on the design. An A4 spread could be appropriate for a magazine, an A5 for a smaller "pocket guide".

The way the publication is bound is another consideration the designer needs to make. The binding method has an influence on the overall aesthetic and feel of the book. If the publication is bound too loose, it will fall apart and not be easily held. If its too tight, you won't be able to open the book at all.

Print finishes are something to consider after the book is printed. Spot varnish could add a nice, subtle effect. Foiling could also add a more professional look to the finished publication. There are many different ways of adding finishes to the publication, which will all be considered within this project.
