OUGD404 - What is a book? Studio Brief 2

Today we had our first session of Studio brief 2 - "What is a book?".
We were sat in 3 different groups and were asked to answer 4 different questions on large sheets of paper and then compare and contrast with each group.
Our first question was - What is a book?

We came up with a lot of words to do with books, but not a full definition. When Simon asked us what our most precise definition of a book is, we said "A series sequential information bound in a folded document"

Then, we were asked to come up with what our most "loose definition" of what we thought a book was. We said that a book is "A product". Something that can be bought or traded for in return for knowledge.

Our next question was - What is the purpose of a book?

We thought of quite a few ideas here again, but it all linked back to communication. Communicating knowledge, memories, stories and facts.

Our third question was - How is a book constructed?

The main ideas that we got here was how the book was physically constructed, and the different types of binding, e.g. staple, string, glue etc. We also thought about the author, and how they construct the book through chapters, paragraphs and sentences.

Our final question was - What are your 2 favourite books?
I chose Game of Thrones and The Magic Faraway Tree. Both of these are fiction books, but one is a series I follow now and one was what I read as a child. Game of Thrones is one of my favourites because of the gripping story and the nature of the characters. The Magic Faraway Tree is also one of my favourites because its very nostalgic, and I always remember the illustrations from that book.
